A Thanksgiving to Remember...
By Kim Stellhorn

Thursday, I was reminiscing about a Thanksgiving morning back about 30 years ago.

Little did we know that earlier that year when Dickinson Fire department totaled out 2 fire trucks by hitting each other  (one truck broad sided the other), it would lead to a domino effect on Thanksgiving day.

Thanksgiving morning before dawn a 2 story house fire came in on FM 646 north around 2nd street.(This was way before automatic mutual between our 3 departments) It was blowing and going. Alta Loma responded with 2 trucks, and after dumping a load of water it was realized they would need assistance, so they called Dickinson, who sent a  loaner truck they received from Texas City. When it arrived everyone realized it was a High pressure Jim Beam with no way of supplying water to the Alta Loma truck. By that time the structure was really going and with no water around, Arcadia was requested. Remember at that time we had no tone alert monitors or walkie talkies. The morning weather had also created a light ice on the windshields of personal firefighter vehicles and a light fog hung in the air. I drove hanging out the window so I could see.
We ended up sending a pumper and a tanker to the fire, When we arrived with the pumper all Alta Loma engines had left for water and we hooked up to the gated wye on the ground and were the primary engine until we ran out of water.
By that time the 2 story was on the ground anyway.

What a way to start a turkey day!!!

The home was located in the general area across the highway where the Buddhist temple is now.
